Van Eck launched the Lightest Twindeck at transport logistic 2023

The leading innovative transport solutions provider Van Eck Trailers participated at transport logistic 2023 fair that took place in Munich, Germany between May 9 and 12, 2023.

Van Eck Proudly Launched The Lightest Twindeck Vehicle at Transport Logistic

One of the first developers of Twindeck trailers, Van Eck’s Eckstreme Series Twindeck vehicles, are the benchmark for the industry. Built with exceptional quality and high functionality in every detail, Van Eck Twindecks are the most efficient way of cargo transport decreasing fuel consumption and CO2 emission by 40%.

Expert Van Eck R&D updated the Van Eck Twindeck construction to optimize its weight and now presents a 450kg weight advantage while not compromising the robustness and longevity of the vehicle. With improved wheel cabinet upper frame, gooseneck section and rear chassis designs the Next Generation Van Eck Twindecks with plywood panels increase load factor, which is already 60% more than standard box vehicles.

Communicated by its slogan “This is not a trailer, This is 2.578 trees per year”, Van Eck Twindeck is the best solution available to meet CO2 emissions targets today. To demonstrate easily to transport companies making sustainability highest priority on their agenda, Van Eck has developed TCO calculator presenting a preliminary cost and Co2 savings for themselves. Developed in association with Simon Kutcher the leading consultancy firm and available on its website, the TCO calculator takes into account fuel consumption and emission parameters to demonstrating available environmental benefits of the vehicles.

The parameters presented at the TCO calculator are a dimished set of what expert R&D team uses to find the best possible solution to transport companies and the environments problems. At Transport Logistics 2023, Van Eck strongly encouraged transport companies to try the TCO calculator and further their planning with team Van Eck to collectively address our common environmental goals.

The Next Generation Twindeck offers improved ground clearance

Thanks to Van Eck’s patented new design of the outer profiles, the vehicle’s ground clearance is improved up to 50 mm. Furthermore, because of the patented bolted construction, the outer floor frame can be replaced easier.

While new design allows higher serviceability, the improved ground clearance enables to protect the underneath vehicle from damage on the road, due to rocks or unpaved roads.

Van Eck offers higher serviceability for operational efficiency.

As Van Eck Twindecks are built for higher product life and higher serviceability, Van Eck further improved the serviceability of the Next Generation Twindecks. In addition to existing features such as hardened aluminum upper and lower floors and neat cabling canals, the air tank connection to the wheel cabinets has been updated for easier serviceability.

Furthermore, in the rear section, the airbags installed to support the inner lift operations, are replaced with aluminum profiles. The advantage is of course higher component life, as well as less maintenance requirement.

Last but not least, the door is made of aluminum profiles, so partially the door can be repaired and maintained more efficiently.

Van Eck supplies versatile platform trailer to Rutges

Van Eck Trailers has supplied Rutges Cargo with a special platform trailer that is suitable for numerous activities at Rutges, like transporting lithography machines to produce chips.

Rutges Cargo has grown considerably since the takeover by the current director, Vincent van ‘t Schip. This not only resulted in a new high-profile location in Rozenburg, at the Schiphol Logistics Park, but Rutges gradually became a household name not only for the transport, but also for the storage of high-quality goods. “In the past two years, we have acquired 35,000 square meters of storage space. We started in 2020 with 6,000 meters,” says Van ‘t Schip.

Three disciplines

He explains that Rutges Cargo is strong in three disciplines, in addition to the safe temporary storage: firstly, the transport of high-quality cargo, whereby the transport meets the TAPA requirements. Secondly, pharmaceutical transport, which meets GDP standards, and thirdly, what Van ‘t Schip calls aerospace- related and sensitive transport, to which none of the above-mentioned certifications apply. According to Van ‘t Schip, safety standards have become increasingly strict, so you automatically must look for partners you can trust all the way.

Partners

“Van Eck Trailers is such a partner. We have been one of the logistics service providers of ASML from Veldhoven for two years now. Their machines require the highest safety category in transport, so we are proud to be at the forefront of ASML carriers. Because they work with multiple container sizes for their machines, Van Eck has developed a platform trailer that is multifunctional. When you look at the result now, you wonder who else can build something like this.” The new trailer has in-house developed Van Eck roller conveyors with driving assistance that can be operated by the driver. In addition, twistlocks can be placed exactly at those places in the loading floor where it is necessary, to optimally secure ASML containers. Other safety issues such as width plates are not lacking and the platform trailer has a low loading floor, so that the fifth wheel height for the tractor may only be 95 cm. A well-known size in the air freight world. As icing on the cake, the trailer has a roll-up tarpaulin that optimally protects the roller conveyors. Unsurprisingly, light-alloy wheels are not missing, and the rear axle is forced-steered. “Soon we will be carrying out tests with the customer on loading, securing and transporting the various types of containers and we will learn all the ins and outs of this unique trailer,” says Van ‘t Schip. “It shows nicely how we have upgraded Rutges Cargo from a ‘generalist’ to a high-quality logistics service provider. Not only the Netherlands, but the whole of Europe is our playing field.”

Rutges Cargo Europe

Rutges Cargo has a fleet of over one hundred tractor units They pull a fleet of approximately 130 trailers. Training will be required to handle the Van Eck trailer, but that is inevitable because of the numerous possibilities this trailer offers.”

Christoph Reder convinced of new Twindeck trailer from Van Eck

Food transporter Christoph Reder from Austria recently exchanged his eight-year-old Van Eck Twindeck trailer for a new one. But the new one is technically very different.

Since 1991, Reder has built up his company himself from one truck that he drove himself, to a company with 57 towing units and at least fifty refrigerated trailers. “We are simply a family with diesel in our blood.” Christoph and his son Stefan drove by truck from Austria to Beesd to collect their trusty Van Eck trailer. They are particularly curious about the trailer that Van Eck has ready for them.

Adjustable load floor

Most eye-catching of the new Twin Deck trailer is the adjustable upper load floor. It can be adjusted sixty centimeters, even when the floor is loaded to a maximum of fifteen tons. This distance is crucial to ensure that the upper load floor can be loaded and unloaded quickly, just as quickly as with a standard refrigerated trailer, at a standard loading dock.

Double tail lift

Thanks to an ingeniously conceived, dual tailgate with an outer and an inner section, the driver can load his trailer safely and quickly. Additional details ensure that the cold chain is not interrupted during this loading or unloading if it is up to Van Eck. When the top floor is loaded and back in the upper position, which requires a pallet height of 1.82 meters, the driver can load the lower part of the trailer. During this charging, the dual tailgate consists of one rigid whole.

Last packages

When the last pallets or packages have been loaded, the driver places the inner tailgate, on which roll containers are placed, at the level of the upper loading floor. Then it disconnects the two tailgates, leaving the inner one on top, with charge. The outer base is placed at the level of the lower load floor, possibly also loaded, after which the tailgate can be closed. If it is closed, the driver closes the rear doors, and the ride can begin.

Much more efficient Christoph Reder is convinced of the advantages and wants to use this trailer optimally. “We are going to use it on a fixed route between a distribution centre in Austria and one in Slovakia. Fixed routes with full load. Our client, who brought us into contact with Van Eck at the time, and we reap the benefits of efficient transport, much more efficiently than a conventional 13.60 trailer. If the quantities of cargo unexpectedly become smaller, then this Twindeck is still a very efficient trailer.”

Diversity

Christoph Reder’s company has a wide variety of activities. “We work a lot with swap bodies because customers ask us to do so. In addition, we drive with city trailers in the various cities, such as Salzburg.” Christoph Reder has also had his son Stefan in the business for 2.5 years, while his wife has been doing the administration since the beginning. “And real family business!”, laughs the Austrian.

Van Eck supports Bidfood sustainability goals

Trailer manufacturer Van Eck supports Bidfood ‘s ambitious sustainability
goals with the delivery of two dollies that significantly increase the
versatility of Bidfood ‘s fleet. “We connect the dolly to a rigid truck and
then attach a trailer behind it.”

Bidfood ‘s logistics operation is extensive and twofold. With a fleet of
450 units, the stocks of eighteen branches are maintained daily. Thousands
of customers are served from there, who can choose from a range of more
than 50,000 products that must of course be delivered daily and fresh at
the desired time. “It is of the utmost importance that we do this with an
operation that is as efficient as possible,” explains Cor de Rooij, head of
fleet management at Bidfood.

Versatile

Working efficiently requires a versatile use of equipment. In the morning,
Bidfood trucks supply catering customers throughout the Netherlands. In the
afternoon they are coupled to the new Van Eck dolly, after which an LHV is
formed with a full trailer. “This allows us to take fourteen more pallets
in one trip. Our motto is to do our work as sustainably as possible with
the least possible burden on people and equipment.” Thanks to Van Eck’s new
dollies, Bidfood’s long and heavy vehicle combinations of up to 55 tonnes
can continue their operations smoothly “At the same time, we save on
kilometres, fuel, CO 2 emissions and personnel hours.”

No strangers

Van Eck and Bidfood are no strangers to each other. “We have worked
together for a long time already and it is great to know that Van Eck
trailers are always there to support us in our sustainability goals.”

No seasonal work

De Rooij emphasizes that Bidfood ‘s work is by no means seasonal. “It’s
busy all year round, we don’t have seasonal peaks. This requires accurate
planning, not only for the deployment of equipment, but of course also for
drivers, not to mention the maintenance of the equipment. To this end, we
work closely with brand dealers. In this way we ensure that our fleet is
always well maintained and with the right appearance. It is great that we
were able to do this project with Van Eck.”

The originator of the now industry standard Twindeck trailers

In December 1995, van Opijnen from Deventer asked Van Eck to build a never made trailer with an extreme height of 3485mm. The resulting trailer for Ten Kate Flowers to carry palm trees upright is the first milestone in Van Eck’s now industry standard Twindeck Trailers. Van Eck introduced the very first Twindeck that offers %60 more volume in 2002.

Built with exceptional quality and high functionality in every detail, Van Eck Twindecks is the most efficient way of cargo transport for you and the environment. With every operation, the Twindeck vehicles enable its customers to carry 54 pallets and thus decrease CO2 emissions by 40% for the environment.

At the IAA Transportation 2022 fair, Van Eck Twindeck vehicle with a moveable floor was presented demonstrating the automatic as well as manual operations of the movable floor, enabling easy and efficient loading of 56 trolleys or 34 euro-pallets on the upper floor, and 39 trolleys or 21 euro-pallets on the bottom floor, reaching 60% more loading capacity than a standard trailer.

You can calculate your own TCO and CO2 savings with easy online tool

Van Eck uses expert tools to calculate TCO advantages with exact operations data from its customers to design and manufacture the Twindecks that best fit their needs. These calculations happen when a customer makes a formal inquiry for Twindecks. However, to raise awareness on how Twindeck benefits the savings and the environment Eckstremely, Van Eck has launched a basic version of the expert tool on its website for everyone to do a preliminary calculation. The basic TCO and CO2 calculator has been developed with the leading strategy and marketing consultants Simon-Kucher & Partners.

With the newly established TCO and CO2 calculator available on vanecktrailers.com website, it is possible to calculate the total vehicle costs and the reduction of CO2 emissions of Van Eck Eckstreme Twindecks easily.

According to the TCO calculator, the twindeck trailer pays for itself in 1 year and also saves 55.935 kg of CO2 equivalent to 2.578 trees. While total savings continue to rise exponentially, 1 twindeck alone over 5 years with an annual average mileage of 150,000 km with the savings going up to 445.190 € with 279.675 kg of CO2 and 12.888 trees.

Van Eck is the proud winner of the Trailer Innovation 2023 Awards

The leading innovative transport solutions provider Van Eck has proudly won 1st place of the Trailer Innovation Awards 2023 in the category ‘Component’ with its in-house developed Container Locker System for the safe and secure transportation of roll containers, most efficiently and sustainably transported with Van Eck’s signature Twindeck vehicles, the innovation award winner in 2005.

Van Eck designed, tested, and finalized a most practical, flexible low-cost device, the Container Locker System that addresses partial loading, load security problems, and their subsequent cost, time, and operational health and safety results.

Previously on the prestigious Trailer Innovation Awards, Van Eck was 3rd in 2005 with its signature Twindeck Trailer, 2nd in 2011 in the ‘Body’ category with its Eckspressive Air Cargo Trailer, and 3rd in 2021 in the ‘Environment’ category with its Smart Rollerbed Vehicles with NMLU (New Modular Loading Unit).

In-house developed systems for safe and efficient loading/unloading and safety of the cargo

Transport of goods in roll containers is an efficient method used in the Benelux region and DACH region for a variety of goods such as postal services, laundries, retail, and flower transportation. Roll containers are loaded in all types of box trailers as well as Van Eck signature Twindeck trailers that present %60 more loading capacity.

As Van Eck prioritizes not only manufacturing the highest quality long-lasting and least carbon footprint solutions for their customers’ unique transport challenges, it equally develops systems for safe and efficient loading and unloading of goods as well as safety of the cargo.

Van Eck Container Locker System for your flexible loading needs

During operations, the ideal loading of roll containers would fill up the trailer entirely with load securing via security bars at the end of trailers, already designed and built as the trailer is initially designed. However, customers’ operations may require partial flexible loading was already designed and built-in load securing mechanisms would fail short to provide security.

When partially loaded roll containers are not secured and move freely within the trailer knocking on each other and side panels, they damage goods loaded in the roll containers, damage the side walls without risk to road safety, they damage the roll containers themselves. The damages result in, operational inefficiency and extra costs of goods replacement, repair costs of the trailers as well as declining second-hand value, and replacement cost of damaged roll containers.

Van Eck Container Locker System is a light, long-lasting practical solution that accommodated all variations of partial loading of load containers and does not require training or extensive experience to operate.

The Container Locker System is made of light and durable aluminum, and has 800 mm in length and 100 mm x 100 mm (width x depth), and weighs 3 kg each. The Container Locker System consists of 2 units of telescopic rods, in combination with a square beam that secures the roll container blocks by less than 10. The maximum amount of roll containers for a box trailer is 44. Van Eck’s Container Locker System works even for 43 roll containers.

Van Eck is proudly taking its place at IAA transportation 2022, in Hall 27 E32, between 20-25 September in Hannover Germany. Reinventing modern road transport since 1912, Van Eck will present the most sustainable transport solutions to address carbon emissions targets today.

Last bodywork sold by Joost van Eck delivered

Last week, a rigid body was delivered to the German company Georgi Transporte at Van Eck Trailers in Beesd, which was sold by Joost van Eck in the autumn of 2018. Because Joost died in 2019 due to a serious accident, the delivery of the last vehicle was a special moment.

Close family ties

“The relationship with Van Eck goes back more than 32 years when my father bought the first air freight trailer from Hans van Eck. When I took over the company from my father in the early nineties, I continued to do business with Hans and in recent years I bought all the vehicles from Joost. Because you as families have been doing business with each other for so long, another bond is created in addition to a business relationship. That is why today was a sad day not only for the Van Eck family but also for us,” says Jürgen Georgi.

Last honor

Georgi: “In 2018, we wanted to drive a number of LHVs, or as we say here, Lang LKW, between our German branches. Joost had specified the structure of the towing vehicle, but due to problems at the truck manufacturer, we got the wrong chassis. Then came corona. Before we knew it, we were two years further and now that the relaxations are a fact, we are coming to receive this box truck”. Rene Oome, Sales Manager at Van Eck Trailers, adds: “Because we, as Van Eck Trailers, did not want to let this moment pass by, we signed Joost’s signature on this truck. In this way, we wanted to pay Joost a final tribute because of his services to the company”.

Strongin air freight for many years

Georgi Transporte from Burbach in Sauerland has developed since the early nineties, when Jürgen Georgi took over from his father Siegfried, from a company with less than twenty trucks to a pan-European logistics service provider in air freight with more than 700 trailers and almost a thousand employees. Georgi has branches at the airports of Frankfurt, Schiphol, Liège, Hamburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Prague and the company also has a branch at Breslau in Poland. In Frankfurt, the company has 20,000 square meters of space to handle air freight. Georgi has stationed up to a hundred trucks at a few other locations.

TSL convinced of the advantages of Van Eck Eckstreme Twindeck Trailers

The German logistics service provider TSL, which has been part of the German retail giant Rewe for several years, is convinced of the advantages of Twindeck Trailers from Van Eck. Recently, a new one was put into use.

TSL stands for Transport System Logistics, and that is exactly what the company stands for. “Thanks to a sophisticated system, we manage to save a lot on fuel consumption and emissions. On our website we keep track of our savings exactly for our customers. In this policy, trailers with a twindeck loading floor such as Van Eck’s play a major role,” explains managing director Günther Timmsen. “We save every third trailer ride with a double-decker, so that we can deliver the same transport performance with less material, drivers and emissions. “

Movable load floor

Timmsen explains that the double-decker trailers run between Rewe’s various German distribution centres. “As a result, the trailers are always full. We can take more with us, but thanks to the adjustable upper floor it is also possible to carry higher loaded pallets if necessary. In this way, we achieve a higher load factor, we deal more effectively with packaging, we contribute decreasing the traffic congestion and we avoid emissions. Van Eck twindeck is 60% more efficient and there is no other more flexible trailer than Van Eck. This is reflected in a positive way in all parts of our work. ” Timmsen says that Rewe works with roll containers as well as pallets. “That’s not a problem for us either.”

Sustainable growth

TSL started as a company in 1994 with three people. “We now have 107 personnel, 62 towing units and thirteen double-decker trailers, the majority of which were supplied by Van Eck,” says Timmsen. ” We have known Van Eck for almost ten years now, and the oldest Van Eck double-decker trailer in our fleet has been running for six years now. So, it can last certainly for a much longer time. The construction is particularly robust, we have no problems with it. This is also because we carry out maintenance ourselves in time. ” Timmsen explains that TSL has its own workshop. “Nice central in Germany, so that’s beneficial. Van Eck’s cooperation in the field of hydraulics and electronics is exemplary. Van Eck’s service is an extra reason to remain a customer of this supplier!”

Drivers

At TSL, drivers who are going to drive a Twindeck receive special training to learn the specialties of this type of trailer. “As a result, some drivers do not want anything else than to drive this type of trailer. And that they would rather not have another driver use their double-decker when they are on holiday,” says Timmsen. “But of course we don’t start with that,” he says with a wink.

Over 860,000 tons of meat transported with a Van Eck refrigerated trailer

In 2014, the trailer manufacturer Van Eck delivered a three-axle trailer for shuttle transport from the production site to the high-bay warehouse. From the plant of the German meat processor Badenhop to its logistics center, it is 2.5 kilometers. Even though, this trailer has covered relatively few kilometers, it has transported huge tonnages of meat.

If a trailer is used in a shuttle service and is loaded fully automatically within a few minutes and goes on the road to be unloaded fully automatically a few kilometers later and then automatically loaded with empty pallets again at the same location, then this is of course a very productive operation. Günter Badenhop Fleischwerke KG from Verden, which is located near Bremen, uses a special Van Eck trailer for such work. This trailer has been in use for seven years and has transported about 108,000 tons of meat annually, 20 tons per trip, and is now due for maintenance. “We bought a new shuttle from Van Eck a few weeks ago. That is why the old one can now be maintained. Afterwards we will use it as a back-up. In the future, we will use both trailers in parallel,” says Christian Otten, Logistics Manager at Günter Badnehop Fleischwerke KG.

Long-term relationship

Günter Badnehop Fleischwerke KG and Van Eck met at a trade fair over forty years ago. At that time, the meat processing company was already exploring ways to make logistics as efficient as possible, preferably using advanced technology. This led to the introduction of semi-trailers with a tilting system and an open roof. “Frozen meat blocks were loaded through this roof, which were dumped further down the road,” explains Hans van Eck. “At Badenhop, we have a fleet of 71 tractor units and 140 semi-trailers, mainly tank, silo and refrigerated trailers. And a small number of special trailers, for which we mainly work together with Van Eck. Even today, there is a tipper near Badenhop that Van Eck built in 2001.

Efficiency

Christian Otten works with a state-of-the-art fleet and ensures that the tractor unit and trailer receive optimum service. The performance of the vehicles is also monitored and improvements are made where possible. “Over the past few years, this has led to a significant reduction in the fuel consumption of our trucks and to an improvement in the efficiency of the fleet as a whole. “

Organs and blood meal

Günter Badenhop Flesichwerke KG processes category 3 slaughter by-products and works exclusively with EU-approved suppliers. Badenhop is one of the largest suppliers to the pet food industry and exports its products all over the world. “We have a capacity of more than a thousand tons per day. In our fully automatic high-bay warehouse, up to 16,000 pallets are stored at minus 21 degrees.

Overhaul

The Van Eck trailer, which has now transported 864,000 tonnes of meat, is being overhauled at Van Eck in Beesd. After that, it can be put back in operation at Badenhop Fleisch. “These trailers are an important link in our production process. If a trailer breaks, production here will eventually come to a standstill. Of course, this is unthinkable. The last seven years have proven to us that we can rely on Van Eck.”

Van Eck supplies ten air cargo trailers to Gartner

That Van Eck is a big name abroad is a well-known fact. Recently, that name recognition resulted in a first order from the Austrian transport giant Gartner.

This logistics service provider may have a gigantic fleet of 2,050 tractor units and 2,700 trailers, but the entire fleet is young and as sustainable as possible. In doing so, Gartner does not shy away from putting trailers to the railroad track wherever possible. The originally Austrian company is also active in air cargo and heard about the quality of Van Eck trailers indirectly.

Experiences

Now that the first trailer has been running in the company’s fleet for several months, there is great satisfaction. The airfreight trailer will be driving to destinations in Germany, the Benelux and Italy. Maintenance will be carried out by Gartner’s own workshop at its headquarters in Lambach, Austria. The company expects the new trailer to last at least ten years in the fleet, which of course says a lot about the durability of the air cargo trailers from Van Eck.

Complete

Gartner chose a complete air cargo trailer with a liftable front axle and with a fifth wheel height of 96 cm. This creates the desired internal loading height of three meters. The trailer can carry four air cargo pallets and has a self-supporting floor with roller tracks suitable for loads up to three tons. The structure of the trailers is largely fiberglass reinforced. Gartner chooses to install its own reefer engine. Naturally, the trailers have a TÜV XL cargo insurance certificate.

Major logistics service provider

With Gartner, Van Eck is taking on a major customer. The company is represented in eight countries with a total of nineteen branches. It employs a total of 3900 people. There is storage of goods for customers, for which the company has a capacity of 95,000 square meters of space at its disposal. In Lambach, Gartner has its own rail terminal that the company uses as a corridor between southeast and northwest Europe.

Efficient

Gartner keeps a remarkably close eye on its fleet figures. The fleet consumes around 80 million liters of diesel annually and an average heavy goods vehicle covers 120,000 kilometers per year. Although Gartner is also active in special segments such as commercial vehicle and tank transport, only twelve percent of a total of 900,000 trips per year are made with an empty trailer. With 1,400 containers, 32,000 transports per year are carried out by rail.

Dreier AG: Double-deck trailer in continuous operation since 2004

Van Eck Trailers has a strong tradition of innovative logistics solutions which is communicated by its ‘Trailer Made’ slogan. Conceived in 1995 to carry palm trees which require an internal height of 3485 mm, Van Eck’s twindeck concept, Eckstreme Series, today is the most efficient way of cargo transport for you and the environment.

One of the first interested parties for the Eckstreme double-deck semi trailer was Daniel Dreier, co-owner and board member of Dreier AG. The transport and logistics company operates at various locations in Europe and North Africa with over 600 employees, 300 trucks and 750 swap bodies. The maxim of the Swiss family-owned company is: “Dreier is ecologically on the move. Be it in combined transport or with 30 double-deckers.”

Daniel Dreier held initial talks at the 2004 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show, where Van Eck presented the new Eckstreme. When Dreier showed the concept to his customer, the Swiss postal service, it quickly became convinced of the 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. The first test vehicle was followed in 2006 by the commissioning of the double-decker fleet of 11 vehicles, which grew to 21 trailers four years later. Dreier currently has 30 corner stretchers from Van Eck in operation. Full loads are shuttled between the three major parcel centers of Frauenfeld, Daillens and Härkingen for the Swiss postal service.

All double-deckers are identically equipped, with a height-adjustable intermediate floor, a lifting platform and Van Eck roller conveyor for pallets at the bottom. This allows loading times to be significantly reduced once again. However, it is mainly roller containers that are loaded, or non-refrigerated foodstuffs. Dreier: “On average, each double-decker covers 150,000 km a year in two-shift operation. We’re sure to keep them in heavy use for ten years.”

On Dreier’s initiative (in cooperation with Hugelshofer and the Swiss postal service), many tried-and-tested solutions were found in close exchange with the manufacturer that have proven themselves in tough continuous operation. For example, Daniel Dreier relies on the lifting floor, which can be raised completely over a length of 13.6 m: “This makes direct unloading much faster once again.” He also appreciates Van Eck’s own extremely stable lifting platform. He sees the low susceptibility to damage due to the air-suspended independent wheel suspensions as a further plus. Maintenance is handled by Dreier’s own workshop, whose personnel are trained in the Netherlands – at Van Eck and at Tridec, the manufacturer of the wheel housings. Special training in one-day courses is also provided for the drivers. The driving style is not fundamentally different, but because of the lower ground clearance, it is important to pay attention to bumps in the road and then raise the air suspension in a targeted manner.

In the coming year, the two Swiss partner companies Dreier AG and Hugelshofer AG will procure a total of 15 trailers from Van Eck as a replacement investment and thus continue to be sustainable on the road.

Two Van Eck twindeck trailers for GP Elite

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck has delivered 2 Eckstreme series Twindeck trailers to GP Elite. GP Elite Van Eck twindeck trailers were especially engineered for GP Elite with custom double deck height to accommodate GP Elite’s racing car transportation needs as well as an office.

GP Elite is a specialised company that acts as a total supplier in motor sports and allows its clients to participate in motor sports competitions and sometimes also takes part in them itself. Two double-deck trailers from Van Eck were recently purchased for the company’s extensive, fine-grained logistics, which operates throughout Europe.

GP Elite supports no less than five Porsche touring car competitions resulting in GP Elite’s trailers being used throughout the year. In addition to the competitions, GP Elite also supports incentives and related motorsport activities and has extensive opportunities to prepare its own racing cars and to do this also at the tracks where GP Elite has to put in an appearance.

Twindeck trailer

GP Elite got in touch with Van Eck because the company was looking for a racing trailer that was more versatile than the equipment it had been working with so far. “We understood that the double-deck concept could be something for us. But then it had to be changed a bit,” says Robert van Teijlingen of GP Elite. “We would prefer to have the second loading floor built in a little higher. This would allow us to use the first floor as an office, naturally equipped with sufficient lighting, air conditioning and power points that are part and parcel of an office. The top floor would be a lot lower, at over 1.50 meters. That’s not a problem, because we can always put three racing cars up there,” says Torsten van Haasteren of GP Elite.

Details

As a result of its extensive experience since 2003 in Twindeck trailers and unparalleled expertise, Van Eck turned out to be able to respond to this effortlessly, but that didn’t finish the trailer. GP Elite wanted an access door on the side, so that it would be easy to enter the office. Furthermore, storage spaces were created above the kingpin, which are easily accessible from the outside. These are some of the many details that characterize these custom-built trailers. The wheels are rigidly suspended and are covered with a protective plate. However, this is ventilated so that the undercarriage never gets too hot. The trailer is equipped with a high tailgate that covers a robust tailgate with which the Porsches can be safely unloaded from the upper deck. That upper deck is designed to hold three race cars in a row. They are secured by means of a special rail developed by Van Eck, in which lashing eyes are fixed at the ideal place to secure the racing cars safely and responsibly.

The trailers are going to get a lot of mileage out of them. As GP Elite is active in five competitions, the trailers will be on a different circuit somewhere in Europe every weekend during the coming summer. Thanks to the expertise of Van Eck, the work of GP Elite with mobile offices can continue at all those locations.

About the Product Range of Van Eck Trailers

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck offers precise and high-quality vehicles by listening to its customers with sustainability as the driving force. Today, Van Eck’s product range consists of 5 categories, respectively, Eckstreme series Twindeck Trailers, Eco Co2mbi series LKV trailers, Eckcellent Distribution vehicles, Eckspress Air Cargo vehicles, and Eckspert Special vehicles.

Eckstreme: Firstly introduced in 2003, Van Eck Twin Deck Trailers enables 40% CO2 emissions decrease by providing 60% more loading capacity. With Twin Deck trailer, Van Eck acquired the Top 3 in Trailer Innovation 2005 Awards.

When it comes to maximum loading volume for a 13.6 m trailer, the Van Eck Extreme Series Twindeck trailer cannot be beaten. With the independent wheel suspension, the special design enables an extremely low floor, a correspondingly high loading space, a second loading floor and additional space between the wheels. By improving the loading efficiency and other innovations, the load factor of a trailer can be increased by up to 60 percent on two levels than a standard trailer with space for 33 pallets, resulting in a linear reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Van Eck Twindeck trailers can hold up to 54 euro pallets, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.

Often twindecks are also used to transport roll containers. Depending on the design, which can be different for different shippers, there is space for up to 89 roll cages in a double-decker. These system advantages come into play with light, non-stackable loads such as packages. That is why various postal groups consistently rely on twindeck trailers.

Van Eck presented its sustainable product range at transport logistic 2021

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck participated in transport logistic 2021 with its online company session named “Discover Van Eck Product Range to meet your CO2 emission targets”.

During the session followed by participants from 25 countries, Van Eck Head of R&D Mr. Ton Bertens in coversation with Mr. Jörg Montag, presented Van Eck product range such as LHV and Twindeck vehicles to enable transport and logistics companies to meet their CO2 targets starting today, as well as presented Van Eck’s contribution to the Aeroflex Project.

Last but not least, Van Eck proudly launched TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and CO2 saving calculation tool during the presentation, developed with the globally active management consultancy Simon-Kucher & Partners.

Van Eck offers the most efficient vehicles to meet your CO2 targets immediately

During the presentation, Mr. Ton Bertens shared detailed information about Van Eck vehicles’ contribution to CO2 reduction targets, advanced features of Eckstreme Twindeck and Longer Heavier vehicles and Van Eck’s contribution to the European-backed Aeroflex project in addition to the launch of brand-new TCO and CO2 saving calculation tool.

“Our vehicles are built with exceptional quality and high functionality in every detail and are environmentally-friendly and efficient to support you while achieving your CO2 targets. These technologies are available right now and especially with Twindeck particular transport companies have been using them successfully for years. With our new TCO and CO2 savings calculator we would like to demonstrate to the general public how Twindeck saves on costs as well as carbon emissions.

Van Eck Twindeck vehicles are setting standards in the industry by allowing two decks with 1.830 mm loading height each thus achieving a 60 percent higher loading capacity. The very first USP is 1.830 mm in order to better explain 60% loading capacity, which reduces lateral air resistance and thus contributes to lower fuel consumption. This factor in combination with the 60 percent higher loading capacity, flows into the balance of the 40 percent lower CO2 emissions. On the other hand, in longer and heavier vehicle segment we focus on maximizing the load factor while providing smart loading and unloading systems to eliminate operational lags and inefficiencies.
As the specialist for transport solutions with low TCO, we will continue to do our part to meet the sector’s CO2 targets.” stated Mr. Bertens.

You can calcute your own TCO and Co2 savings with easy online tool

Van Eck uses expert tools to calculate TCO advantages with exact operations data from its customers to design and manufacture the Twindecks that best fit their needs. These calculations happen when a customer makes a formal inquirty for Twindecks. However, to raise awareness on how Twindeck benefits the savings and the environment Eckstremely, Van Eck has launched a basic verison of the expert tool on its website for everyone to do a preliminary calculation.

When it comes to maximum loading volume for a 13.6 m trailer, the double-deck trailer cannot be beaten. Thanks to the independent wheel suspension, the special design enables an extremely low floor, a correspondingly high loading space, a second loading floor and additional space between the wheels. Ton Bertens, Head of R&D at Van Eck relies on these system advantages: “By improving the loading efficiency and other innovations, the load factor of a trailer can be increased by up to 60 percent on two levels than a standard trailer with space for 33 pallets, resulting in a linear reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Our twindeck trailer is a good example of our approach: it can hold up to 54 euro pallets, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.”

Often double-deckers are also used to transport roll containers. Depending on the design, which can be different for different shippers, there is space for up to 89 roll cages in a double-decker. These system advantages come into play with light, non-stackable loads such as packages.

The rule of thumb, according to which two double-decker tractor-trailer combinations replace three tractor-trailer combinations with a standard box trailer, shows the great savings potential: There is no need for a driver and a tractor unit, the required traffic area is a third less, and the CO2 emissions are reduced by around 40 percent.

Initial investment differences are set off by Twindeck’s volume advantages and the savings accumulate on how trailers are used. In order to facilitate the complex calculation of the investment in a double decker compared to a standard box trailer, Van Eck had the Van Eck TCO and CO2 savings calculator developed with the globally active management consultancy Simon-Kucher & Partners, the leading company in strategy and marketing consultancy. The Van Eck TCO and CO2 saving calculator takes into account all the costs of the capital goods as part of a business total cost calculation.

The Van Eck TCO and CO2 saving calculator takes several parameters such as purchase price of the trailer, interest rate, term in years, fuel price, driver wages (per 100,000 km) and the number of Van Eck twindecks into account when comparing a conventional box trailer and a Van Eck twindeck trailer.

The calculator uses this framework data to calculate the savings against the additional costs. As a result, the higher acquisition costs and the higher maintenance costs of the Eckstreme twindeck are offset by numerous savings potentials including a third fewer tractor units (two instead of three) to buy and maintain, a third fewer drivers (two instead of three), around a third less fuel consumption, lower toll costs, lower insurance costs, lower tire costs and less depreciation.

The concept can demonstrate its strengths above all in full load transport and shuttle transport, and when delivering to supermarkets, the number of stations per tour can be increased significantly. If the framework conditions are right, the investment in a Eckstreme twindeck trailer can pay for itself in just one year. According to calculations by Simon-Kucher &Partners, the twindeck trailer pays for itself in 1 year and also saves 55.935 kg of CO2 equivalent of 2.578 trees. While total savings continue to rise exponentially, 1 twindeck alone over 5 years with an annual average mileage of 150,000 km with the savings goes up to 344.274 € with 229.675 kg of CO2 and 12.888 trees.

Duis Transport on the way with new Van Eck box trailer

The family business Duis Transport from Zaandijk specializes in the transportation of cocoa and cocoa-related products. With a fleet of eight trucks, Duis maintains crucial lines between cocoa processing manufacturers and their customers. Van Eck plays a leading role in the logistics with its extensive experience in implementing smart loading systems.

Over five years ago, Duis used a trailer from Van Eck for this work for the first time. “Initially, we worked with sliding tarpaulin trailers. But to save time in this work, a trailer with fixed walls and with roller tracks turned out to be a better idea,” says Wim Duis who runs the company together with his brother Pieter Duis. That’s how this Van Eck customer came to own an Eckcellent trailer equipped with hydraulic roller conveyors, to load and unload pallets quickly.

Finest Example of Customisation and Implementation of Automatic Loading and Unloading Systems

The trailer was excellent, but for the trailer now purchased, Duis preferred roller conveyors that are operated electrically. “The electric version is significantly stronger. The whole system responds better and the trailer is lighter too!” Duis had a second roller conveyor system installed, a so-called slipchain system. Van Eck has delivered on the best solution upon Duis’s request in working with select supplier of these systems ensuring the loaded pallets are tightly connected to each other in the longitudinal direction of the trailer. “The result is an optimally loaded trailer that is also safer,” says Duis.

In order to also make the best possible use of the axle loads, Duis opts for a TD steering system, in which the first and third trailer axles are steered. Those axles have an axle spacing of more than 1.81 meters between them, which allows them to carry more weight. “As a result, we never run into problems with the axle loads and we also have a trailer that maneuvers optimally and whose tires last considerably longer,” says Duis, who sees this as a fine example of customization by Van Eck.

Aftersales

“But the real reason we chose Van Eck again is the after sales. Van Eck listens carefully to the customer. Not only when they sell the trailer, but also afterwards. That is very important to us and was the decisive factor in our decision to continue working with this supplier,” says Wim Duis.
The new trailer from Van Eck will make five daily trips in North Holland. “So five loading and unloading operations in one day. In this way, we transport 150 tonnes of cocoa product for our customer every day, which is 900 tonnes a week. Loading and unloading takes about two minutes each time. It shows that Van Eck gets full confidence to play a crucial role in our daily logistics operation.”

Van Eck Delivers Five Link Trailers to Van Heezik

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck recently delivered reefer upper structure with reefer and five link trailers to logistics service provider Van Heezik from Utrecht, the Netherlands. The vehicles will be used in LZV combinations that Van Heezik uses for frozen logistics to distribution centres that are part of supermarket chains.

Van Heezik is a company that operates in three disciplines. Paper logistics, frozen logistics and what is called twin logistics. “Paper logistics concerns the transport and processing of packaging materials. We not only drive from A to B, but we also serve our customers with related services such as cutting certain packaging to size,” explains Sales & Project Manager Berend van Heezik.

“We see that the LHV is doing well in the Netherlands, but we cannot do much with it with cross-border traffic, due to legal weight restrictions,” says Van Heezik.

The new Van Eck link trailers come into play in frozen logistics. These are specially tailored to function as an LHV.” Van Eck was able to help us find the right equipment and understood our wishes well. That is why we choose this supplier. It concerns specialist structures that must be able to take a beating and that we want to use for a long time and intensively. Van Eck expertise provides just that, not only reefer upper structure with reefer were exactly to our specifications but with link trailers as well. In terms of LHV’s this is a very special solution and only Van Eck could have delivered this result”.

Bye Bye Diesel

The new link trailers are part of a sustainability project initiated by Van Heezik. “We started the Bye Bye Diesel project three years ago. The goal is to say goodbye to our last diesel truck in 2023. In that year we will have switched completely to LNG. We can refuel this close to our location in Utrecht. Our trailers must also be as sustainable as possible, so we prefer double-deck trailers and LHVs. Customers increasingly want not only the best price, but also the lowest carbon footprint for their transport and logistics. We can certainly play a role in this. ”

Van Heezik is preparing for the switch to Bio-LNG, a gas variant that produces even lower CO2 emissions. “We will start with that next year and we will also keep our customers informed,” says Van Heezik. “We also work with partners to achieve this goal. It strengthens us that more and more of our customers want to participate in this. ” The company from Utrecht now has a total of 150 trailers and 105 tractor units. All maintenance to the fleet is outsourced and according to Van Heezik that is the most efficient form of management.

Van Eck supplies Eckspress Series two-axle air freight trailer to Kretzler Spedition

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck has delivered a special Eckspress series two-axle mega curtainsider trailer to Kretzler Spedition from Hambrücken. The new trailer will transport air freight between Germany and Italy.

With its Eckspress series aircargo vehicles Van Eck builds vehicles with optimum capacity presenting efficent loading with its own highest quality and durability roller conveyors. Kretzer trailer is a typical example of what a specialist like Van Eck is capable of as Van Eck listens to its customers to deliver the transport solution they need. Kretzler wanted a mega curtainsider trailer in the knowledge that the air freight pallets to be transported do not contain conditioned cargo. Director Dieter Kretzler is also convinced that with a loaded weight of ten tons, a third trailer axle is unnecessary. But such a third axle may still be necessary in the future. Thanks to Van Eck, the installation of the third axle, which would then become the front axle of a triple axle, is already prepared. Other features of the trailer include roller tracks and the smaller 17.5 inch wheel size to achieve the desired insertion height required by air freight. The fifth-wheel height specified by Kretzler is 95 centimeters.

Kretzler

For Daniel Kretzler, this is the first Van Eck in his fleet, which consists of thirteen air-freight trailers. “This new one will be used on the route from Frankfurt airport to Milan,” says Kretzler. “We’re working with the certainty that it concerns low weights. That is why we will be driving with two axles for the time being. ” Kretzler is impressed by Van Eck, “It is a long-standing specialist that is able to respond precisely to our wishes.” Kretzler is originally a German family business that distributes fuel oil in the region around Hambrücken. At one point, the company was able to become a haulage company for a company that manufactures tubes. ” Typical volume, so we looked for a suitable trailer for that,” explains Daniel Kretzler. This is how his father’s company ended up in volume transport. “Soon a contact was established with another company that was keen to respond to the increased demand for air freight transport by road. That’s how we came into the picture and this expertise arose. ”

Kretzler, who now serves all major airports in Europe, is satisfied with the current size of the company. “It is nice and clear now in terms of staff and customers. We can respond satisfactorily to the wishes of customers with the current workforce.”

Requirements to Van Eck

Kretzler explains that he cannot arrive at an airport or he sees trailers from Van Eck. “We then hear that those trailers will last a long time and that Van Eck can respond well to individual customer wishes. That appealed to us. The wish to employ a two-axle air cargo trailer with sails was a great opportunity for Van Eck to show what they can do.”

Van Eck organized AEROFLEX webinar to support its stakeholder’s future implementation roadmap

Van Eck organized AEROFLEX webinar to support its stakeholder’s future implementation roadmap

The household name in innovative transport solutions Van Eck organized a special online webinar session with the AEROFLEX project team on 8th of October.

In line with Van Eck’s vision to reinvent to modern road transport with sustainability goals, Van Eck has been active in, European Commission funded, AEROFLEX, a project for developing Aerodynamic and Flexible Trucks for the next generation of Long Distance Transport since October 2017.

During the webinar session, Van Eck Executive Board Member Hans van Eck made the opening speech and AEROFLEX Project Coordinator Ben Kraaijenhagen, Van Eck’s Head of Research and Development Ton Bertens were the moderators.

In the first part of webinar session, Ton Bertens explained Van Eck’s contribution to AEROFLEX project for the development of Aerodynamics of the LHVs as well as the development of the e-dolly. Van Eck also detailed its expertise in volume optimization, expertise in LHV combinations on the road since 2004 and shared details on future Van Eck new LHV vehicle development for the standard trailer, air cargo, Twin Deck combinations as well as the EMS-2 vehicle with the Van Eck smart dolly.

In the second part of the session, AEROFLEX Project Coordinator Ben Kraaijenhagen, detailed AEROFLEX project goals to meet the challenges of zero emission transport with developing the next generation of road vehicles as well as key focuses while addressing the challenge and current development status with the participants. Mr. Kraaijenhagen shared the AEROFLEX agenda until May 2021. Introducing the IAP Task Force Project, Mr. Kraaijenhagen invited all stakeholders, policy makers, planners, owners of the infrastructures and providers of electronic and digital systems to take part in the IAP Task Force for the implementation of the AEROFLEX and sustainable transport solutions in the line with EU carbon reduction demands from the industry.

Van Eck Vehicle Development for Sustainable Transport

“Towards more sustainable transport solutions as well as a lower Total Cost of Ownership, one of Van Eck’s expertise is volume optimization. Air Cargo vehicles, with rollerbeds integrated into the bottom of the trailer, offer internal height advantages and can carry up to 7 pallets per vehicle. Double Deck Trailers are also suitable as reefers or are custom made for DC to DC transportation or supermarket delivery. But there is also the Transformer trailer that has a very flexible double stock system. Double Cargo type trailers offer the option to transport both fluid and pallets. On the way to the packaging factory, it brings the fluid and on the way back, it takes the pallets. We also have integrated Smart Loading Units in our trailers. They are connected to the cloud which enables us to reach maintenance data, trailer status, and error messages.” explained Mr. Bertens.

Next to its expertise in volume optimization, Van Eck makes a difference with its extensive experience in LHV as well.

“One of our LHV lightweight reefers with an automated loading and unloading system can carry up to 33 tons of cargo and drives every day from the North of Holland to the South already for 10 years. At the previous IAA Show, Van Eck showed a long vehicle for 3 x C745 containers. They are now developing the new generation with a less complex steering system. For the past 10 years, we made B Double Eco Combi’s, fully automated, so the driver doesn’t need to get out of his cabin to slide it in or slide it out. The current LHV we are developing and building now, is the linkable chassis in our continuing work for a load and length maximization in a safe and efficient way” he added.

Van Eck continues its innovations within the AEROFLEX project

Van Eck’s vision is to find new and sustainable solutions in modern road transport which is a result of the passion for high-quality and innovation.

Within the AEROFLEX project, Van Eck is in the development work group of the e-Dolly. The e-Dolly leads to energy recuperation and also has the possibility to do warehouse maneuvering. The e-dolly has been tested for first maneuvering in September 2020 with a remote control. The coupling with a standard trailer was also successful. The e-dolly is currently designed to move a loaded trailer for 15km driven by an on electric axle and own battery. The tests for LHVs are being done for the heaviest applications to test the energy savings by recuperation, the limits of coupling and battery life. The development is ongoing with the aim to drive e-dolly systems on a public road for the first time round February / March 2021.

Within the scope of the AEROFLEX project Van Eck also concentrated on the aerodynamic structures of the LHV. Carrying over from Van Eck’s work on European Commission backed Transformers project, the design of the vehicle is optimized for the best aerodynamic performance and different new aerodynamic designs aretested in wind tunnels, promising a high success.

Van Eck’s Goals for Developing LHV for Europe

Van Eck has been manufacturing LHVs since 2004. Van Eck LHVs are in operation in the Netherlands for over a decade now. According to its vision that aims to reinvent modern road transport, Van Eck will continue to focus on LHVs for upcoming years. “For LHVs, we have the problem that different types of long vehicles are not allowed in different countries. So, the best thing to do is to choose the long vehicle type that is allowed in different European countries.” Mr. Bertens summarized.

Van Eck approaches each LHV as a unique challenge to offer the best possible solution. Based on the country-specific regulations, the cargo and route, Van Eck calculates the turning radius and decides on the trailer steering systems accordingly to suite the local regulations.

As a solution, Van Eck provides its Basic LHV as a truck-trailer-trailer combination which can consists out of a custom made city trailer with a standard trailer, that can be a of reefer, curtainsider or even a twin deck. For Air Cargo Van Eck has ideas to make vehicles to transport up to 7 air cargo main deck pallets and special Twin Deck long vehicles. Hence Van Eck’s expertise in manufacturing top quality and long lasting vehicles in all segments as well expertise in LHVs with smart steering systems, it allows customers to benefit from the extensive combination options that will address their challenges for different country regulations and border crossing.

Van Eck is working on the EMS-2 vehicle within the AEROFLEX project. For this design, an e-Dolly is needed to recuperate the energy. Due to the big turning circles of the very long EMS-2 vehicles, Van Eck equips e-Dollys with a smart steering to keep EMS-2 vehicles in the same turning circle standards as the LHVs.

Moreover, Van Eck offers smart loading unit to its customers. The Transformer trailer that is the result of Project “Transformers” transforms itself into the most optimal aerodynamic shape according to the height of the cargo that is transported. The Flex Floor is a very flexible double stock system and is a floor that can be lifted out of the bottom of the trailer when needed.

NMLU (New Modular Loading Unit) Clusters 2.0 is a new modular load unit, a unit defined between the pallet and the trailer and provides a fast and secured pallet loading as it brings the benefits of air cargo systems within the pallet logistics.

Van Eck has also taken the 3rd place in the category “Environment” of Trailer Innovation 2021 Awards with the innovation of the Smart Rollerbed Vehicles with NMLU’s that is developed in cooperation with this European group in Clusters 2.0 project.

Next Steps of the AEROFLEX Project for full implementation by 2030

“Started in 2017 October, AEROFLEX project works to meet the coming challenges and increase efficiency for road freight transport and focuses on how to reach zero emission logistics in the future.” stated Mr. Kraaijenhagen.

In the first part of the webinar Mr. Kraaijenhagen explained that the main focus of the AEROFLEX project is the high capacity road transport and in the third part he went on presenting a wider frame of this focus underlining that the AEROFLEX project actually covers a wide range of innovations from the truck and trailer concepts reaching to regulation standards within all European countries in order to reach a 33% general efficiency improvement in cargo and freight efficiency by 2030.

In the following slides of the presentation Mr. Kraaijenhagen gave a short aspects of the project setup inputs including the need of new concepts and smart standards for future truck concepts to have a complete vehicle in a perspective of aerodynamics, technologies, and systems and loading units in a better way underlining the need of smart standards for a better design of long distance and urban logistics on the European roads and cities.

“I think this is a great success and it is a proof that we are on the right way with our project, with our innovations we have developed and we are sure that we can contribute at the high level for more efficient road cargo transport.” added Mr. Kraaijenhagen.

All Stakeholders are invited to IAP Task Force for implementation of sustainable solutions

After a giving detailed information about different technology improvements and innovations within the project, Mr. Kraaijenhagen called attention to the difficulty of bringing up new developed technologies and innovations into life according to strict and fixed European rules explaining the need of the search of other projects around the Europe, introducing the projects Urban Vehicle Access Regulations Program (UVAR) & Management for Electronic Traffic Regulations (METR) of the Nordicway Project, DG Move UVAR as a benchmark for European implementation which have the intention of management of not only people but also freight and cargo in an urban environment in order to allow the vehicles to use the infrastructure by giving certain vehicles and rules. Founded in 1912, Van Eck has a strong tradition of innovative logistics and had made its first success Trailer Innovation Awards in 2005 with Twindeck Trailers as in Top 3.

Van Eck is the only trailer manufacturer to design and produce its own rollerbeds. Since 1983 Van Eck has been expertly producing rollerbed box and curtainsider vehicles, that are of the highest quality, impeccably designed and manufactured to function with precision, presenting unparalleled operational efficiencies in air cargo business and in special general cargo applications. Van Eck also has the expertise to transform any trailer into a rollerbed vehicle with rollerbed platfom vehicles custom-built for special uses.

Taking its inspiration from air cargo like loading and unloading efficiencies as well as packing standardization and warehouse management ease of use, Van Eck expert team had been working in European commission backed Horizon 2020 project developing smart loading units namely NMLU – new modular loading unit to streamline all general cargo packing loading, unloading and documentation process like the air cargo business.

Smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU are a new concept and have the vision to transform the logistics system with fast automated loading and securing of cargo. Next to those operations, smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU also provide betterment directly in warehousing operations and at large in railway, ferry and aircargo operations. The practicality and safety side of this concept addresses health and safety issues during loading operations, including COVID risk.

For NMLU’s to present the efficiencies, calculated to be %20 loading capacity increase, and overall system efficiency of 50%, the trailers that will work with NMLU’s need to have rollerbed systems. The quality of rollerbeds, as well as the trailers, the precision fitting and durability under all conditions of use guarantee the success of the overall NMLU enabled system. All these qualities are presented in Van Eck box, curtainsider, and recently developed rollerbed 45ft containers focusing on the efficiencies that can be quickly generated in intermodal transport. As intermodal transport is the most similar to air cargo logistics systems among other general cargo logistics and warehousing, it is envisioned intermodal logistics with central hubs of train stations and ferry docks would be the starting point to implement the NMLU system transformation. Recently developed Van Eck rollerbed 45ft container is the first step in general implementation and initial commercialization of the project.

Smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU’s load capacity efficiencies not only contribute to lowering the CO2 emission but also reduces waste to further contribute to sustainability by eliminating the need for plastic and box packaging.

Three Van Eck Double Deck Trailers for KLG Europe

KLG Europe has invested in a series of special Double Deck trailers developed and produced by Van Eck to accommodate the specific demands of Yamaha Motor Europe. The trailers will be used for transporting Motorcycles, ATV’s and Waverunners to support customer events, international press tests, and shows all over Europe. “KLG Europe and Yamaha have known each other for several years now. The relationship started with the shipment of marketing related materials to dealers in Europe, one thing led to another and now we are the turn-key logistic partner for the Marketing division of Yamaha” says Erik Loijen, CEO of KLG Europe.

Complicated question

What is the future of sales? Yamaha has 3.500 dealers across Europe which were all very sales driven. Of course doing sales is key to any organization but how customers buy has changed a lot and will change still the upcoming year. Yamaha had to re-define the customer journey where the physical showroom has been re-designed to a marketing place merged with a completely digital and online experience. A big impact of this new vision is that Yamaha displays much less products in the showroom than a few years ago allowing the products Yamaha does show to get their own dedicated thematized space. But what do you do if you want to see the bike in a specific color or you want to do a testride with one of Yamaha’s race products? For this fully understandable need, Yamaha and KLG Europe developed “The Tour” concept which is a series of trucks driving around Europe visiting dealers, events and/or circuits where our customers can see and try our products. Van Eck trailers are used here and are vital the success. The “Double-Deck” principle allows Yamaha to move the products on the first floor while all promotion materials like flags, banners, tents and furniture are loaded on the ground floor. A nice on the top benefit is the easy branding of the trailer which gives a great visual impact.

KLG Europe

Yamaha tried multiple logistical service providers, who all went for a test drive. “After that period, KLG Europe stood head and shoulders above the rest,” says Wim Vermeulen, who at Yamaha Motor Europe is all about marketing and events. “We have a very complex need as a European marketing division. From shipping a simple package to a dealer in France to running a race- tour event on a circuit in Portugal, it is all in the game. Being on time is crucial when you need to unload a complete trailer at our showroom in the middle of Paris because if your late everyone is waiting for you and the same goes for all the tours we do nowadays which with Covid-19 are getting even more important as shows have been canceled. To find a company to do each discipline well at the best price is easy, but finding someone who can do all disciplines at a correct price was difficult and in the end, only KLG could exactly deliver what we asked for. You know for KLG who never had experience with Double-Deck trailers it was a big step to do this with us but they have never been afraid to develop together new concepts and roll them out ”

Van Eck

Until recently Yamaha worked with specifically built racetrailers, but Yamaha was looking for a special trailer that could carry a relatively large number of motorcycles or waverunners and was also manoeuvrable. Van Eck was the right partner that has a strong tradition of innovative logistics solutions and offers “Eckcellent” trailers.

“Broadly speaking, the same applies to Van Eck as to KLG Europe,” says Vermeulen. “They also thought along with us, and Van Eck is the pioneer of innovation in many systems and naturally proactive. As a result, we ordered three customized trailers from Van Eck in a Double Deck version. They are the most efficient for our work because of its loading capacity and they have the perfect appearance that we want for Yamaha, ”says Vermeulen. “The unique fastening system guarantees that our motorcycles and waverunners are transported safely.” Vermeulen is impressed by the flexibility at Van Eck. “We put a challenging deadline in the contract which meant they only had six weeks to do the job, the deadline was key as the trailers immediately had to leave to Tenerife. Van Eck delivered on the agreed date and time and you could see the guys of Van Eck smile when we picked them up, this is the spirit which suits us and KLG well”

Growth

KLG Europe directs the logistics of all marketing division projects at Yamaha. KLG Europe is a fast-growing multinational logistics company with multiple locations in Europe and an extensive European distribution network. About 1.100 people work there

Van Eck Eckstreme Double – Deck Trailers

Van Eck is among the first to have developed double deck trailers in 2003 and is now the industry standard for double deck.

With 60% more loading capacity, Van Eck double deck trailers enable the operator to save on every kilometer while reducing the CO2 emissions. Eckstreme series double deck are available as box, refrigerated box, with 2 or 3 axles, with inner lift or movable platform to make best out of the available loading capacity.

Van Eck delivers B-Double LHV to Dekker Chrysanten

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck saw Dekker Chrysanten return as a customer, after the latter was more than satisfied with the first purchase from Van Eck, a refrigerated trailer. “There was sufficient reason to be the first to ask Van Eck whether they can supply a B-Double LHV,” said Aschwin Hooyboer, Head of Logistics at Dekker Chrysanten.

Dekker Chrysanten is a global player when it comes to growing and selling these colorful flowers. The company is represented on several continents with its own branch. Most cultivation work just happens in the Netherlands. In order to be able to serve the growers with fresh cuttings from the head office in North Holland, the six Dekker Chrysanten trucks drive almost round the clock. “We have six trucks, twelve trailers and fourteen drivers because we do not prefer to leave trucks stationary,” explains Hooyboer. Two trucks are now being used as LHV. “This allows us to carry more block pallets. A total of 42 pallets will be carried in the LHV. So with both long combinations, we get three trailer combinations off the road. ” Van Eck built a new front part for Dekker Chrysanten to which the standard trailer is coupled. However, this part was also equipped with a slider lift. “We do this because we cannot unload at a dock by every grower,” explains Hooyboer. Both LHVs operate exclusively within the Netherlands. Van Eck has prepared the equipment for the transport of flower carts. “That way, we can also recharge effectively and our combinations run empty less often,” says Hooyboer.

Liquid gas

Dekker Chrysanten does not go far enough to reduce the number of trucks on the road while maintaining a consistent transport performance. “We will start using the first LNG trucks during the year to further reduce the environmental footprint of our transport performance. Ultimately, we also intend to drive the LHV with LNG trucks in front of it, ”Hooyboer explains further. “An additional advantage is that these trucks are more comfortable for the driver and that they will use this gas economically. This is how we make our transport activity in the Netherlands more sustainable, which we can safely call intensive. ”

Dekker Chrysanten

At the Dekker Chrysanten headquarters, cogeneration is already being used for the cultivation of the flowers in order to be able to meet its own energy supply. In the countries where Dekker Chrysanten is active, it works as little as possible with harmful pesticides, fair wages are paid and local education initiatives are supported.

Van Eck delivers Mega Curtain Aero Engine Carrier and Mega Aero Engine Carrier to Georgi

The German specialist in air freight and high-quality transport Georgi has been a Van Eck customer for decades. Recently, Mega Curtain Aero Engine Carrier and Mega Aero Engine Carrier trailers were delivered by Van Eck.

The main reasons why Georgi comes to Van Eck for the purchase of new trailers are diverse. “First of all, Van Eck can supply trailers with an internal loading height of more than three meters,” explains fleet manager Hubert Hohl of Georgi. “Secondly, Van Eck always carries out our orders precisely, which is very evident with these trailers, which are equipped with numerous facilities to simplify and speed up loading and unloading,” says Hohl.

Higher and wider

The trailers that Georgi ordered this time have, in addition to a sliding roof, also the possibility to raise the entire roof sixty centimeters over its full length. In addition, the side walls at the rear can be shifted outwards, allowing high and wide machines, for example, to be loaded quickly, safely and damage-free. The technique used to change the trailer in this way comes from Van Eck’s own expertise. Six roller conveyors have been concealed in the loading floor of the trailer and the drive for these has been installed centrally under the loading floor. This creates a trailer with an unusually large loading volume and with exceptional facilities for quick and safe loading and unloading.

Multiple locations

Immediately after delivery, the first of these two trailers left for the Amsterdam, or rather Schiphol branch of Georgi to load a machine. Georgi also has branches in the Czech Republic and Poland, as well as directly at Frankfurt and Leipzig airports. Van Eck has been supplying Georgi with trailers since the mid-1980s. “We have seen the company grow further and further because it has always opted for the most efficient equipment,” says Hans van Eck. Georgi now has a fleet of 400 tractor units and another 470 trailers. It is also striking that Georgi is one of the few German haulers that has a number of LHVs working on a structural basis for several customers. In addition to air freight, Georgi also specializes in pharma transport, dangerous goods, conditioned transport, machine transport and the transport of high-quality cargo.

Van Eck is Proudly Nominated in Trailer Innovation 2021 Awards

After first participating in 2005 with now industrsy benchmark Van Eck Eckstreme Twindeck Trailers, expert manufacturer Van Eck has been nominated in Trailer Innovastion Awards 2021 with Smart Rollerbeded Vehicles with NMLU in the cagetory ‘Environment’.

Aeroflex intensifies cooperation with Van Eck

When it comes to innovation, Van Eck is the company that has the reputation to uphold. Van Eck plays an important role in the Aeroflex project, in which research is carried out with the support of the European Commission in cooperation with other parties into more efficient and environmentally friendly freight transport. Two prototypes are being developed for this purpose.

One of the two prototypes in this project is under construction at Van Eck. And that is only part of the story. “The starting point of the Aeroflex project is to work with larger and heavier, but also more versatile combinations in order to achieve more efficient road transport in Europe. This project also explicitly looks at the intermodal possibilities of the developed vehicles”, says Ben Kraaijenhagen, who leads the Aeroflex project and has a long track record in the development of trucks, trailers and logistics systems.

Intermodal

The trailer that is being developed at Van Eck is a greatly improved version of a trailer that was developed for an earlier project. “As a result, this trailer has become significantly more versatile. In the first place, the trailer is now also suitable for transport on the train,” says Ton Bertens, engineer at Van Eck full title who is working on the Aeroflex file. “Furthermore, there is a coupling at the rear under the chassis, with which a dolly can be coupled, which in turn couples with a second trailer. This creates an A-Double, Twin Trailer or Van Eck Super Eco Combi, of two trailers. This is in line with the goals of Aeroflex and with developments that play a role elsewhere in European road transport.” Bertens further explains that more aerodynamic aids have been fitted on the side and rear to further reduce the tractor’s fuel consumption. “Cargo Cams’ have also been installed at the front and rear of the load compartment. These are cameras to better estimate the loading volume and we have developed a software program especially for this trailer that allows the planner to load the trailer optimally”. These aerodynamic features will also be tested in the intermodal shipment if they withstand all forces coming from the high speeds.

By railway testing

Now that the trailer has been made suitable for transport by rail, we will see when we can start with a test-drive where the trailer will be put on the train in Luxembourg and taken off again at the Spanish-French border. The versatility of the Aeroflex trailer is demonstrated by the fact that it can also be part of a Super Eco Combi or Twin Trailer combination added Mr. Bertens.

Logistic thinking

“As a project committee, we have always advocated for Van Eck’s involvement in this project,” says Ben Kraaijenhagen. “This company thinks along with logistics systems. You can also see that in their product portfolio. They are better than anyone familiar with the requirements of sub-sectors in road transport and can therefore respond in a practical manner to the questions we are working on with this project, ”says Ben Kraaijenhagen.

Swiss Post and Hugelshofer rely on Van Eck

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck serves its many customers around Europe and the world with its highly specilized trailers. The Swiss Post, for example, has been relying on Van Eck trailers for years.

For transport, the Swiss Post cooperates with a number of logistics service providers. They have special trailers in the striking yellow Post colours. Van Eck recently delivered a new Eckstreme Dubbledeck Trailer to Swiss logistics service provider Hugelshofer, a versatile company consisting of four divisions. In total, Hugelshofer has a fleet of 170 vehicles and 300 employees. The Logistics division carries out the work for the Swiss postal company. This is a well-known customer of Van Eck. “The Eckstreme Double Deck Trailer has more than proven itself in our work”, says Erwin Gloor of the company. “We have been driving for the postal company for at least 20 years. We have been working with Van Eck since 2005. They developed the double-deck trailer with us and with one of the other Swiss Post logistics service provider, Dreier AG. It has been a fine example of industry collaboration. We did the entire development and procurement of the trailers in close cooperation with Dreier.”

Intensive commitment

The double-deck trailers are used intensively. Hugelshofer says that the trailers drive short distances and are always heavily loaded. “These trailers are loaded and unloaded up to eight times a day every day. This entails the necessary wear and tear, ”says fleet manager Erwin Gloor of Hugelshofer. “Van Eck took up the challenge and made sure we got the right trailer available, improving it where necessary,” said Gloor.

Better productivity

The use of a double deck trailer was obvious for Hugelshofer from the outset. “By working with a double-deck trailer, we reduce the number of trips and save up to thirty percent CO2 emissions. The condition for this is that you have to have a suitable deployment area in which these trailers can be used to their full advantage. That’s certainly the case with us,” Gloor says.

Drivers

Hugelshofer comes with these trailers in places that are difficult to reach. “The space at many customers is extremely limited, which is why the tour is often millimetres for our drivers. It requires our drivers to know exactly what they can and can’t do and not get nervous right away. It goes without saying that drivers who want to drive a double-deck trailer have to go through a induction programme”.

Maintenance

Hugelshofer maintains the trailers in-house, but the workshop is managed by a specialist company and is therefore officially not owned by Hugelshofer “This guarantees professional maintenance,” says Gloor. “Every three months, the trailers are expected in the workshop for an overall inspection.”

Van Eck delivers 17 SPECIAL airfreight trailers to Transweb Japan

Trailer manufacturer Van Eck has delivered seventeen new SPECIAL airfreight trailers to its loyal Japanese customer Transweb. “Some years ago, we found Van Eck on the internet and we visited them at the IAA in Hanover. More appointments followed and we ordered several trailers. The recently ordered SPECIAL airfreight trailers will hit the road in our country soon”, Takeshi Maesawa declared.

Maesawa has lived an impressive career. Starting as a truck driver, he established his own company and he made it grow in several directions. Apart from airfreight, TransWeb is also specialized in container transport, in car transports, and in logistics around events as well as in motorsports. Also, TransWeb is known for transporting exclusive cars for the Japanese market. “This went very well. The Italian manufacturers asked us to execute the pre-delivery inspections as well, the final step before a car is delivered to the customer. We see this as a great honour. It lead to the establishment of a special, dedicated location where we do pre-delivery inspections only”, Maesawa explains. The establishment was realized at the outskirts of Tokyo. “Before manufacturers come to such a decision, they must have done proper investigation if TransWeb is the right partner to entrust such an important step in the quality process towards the end customer.”

Special Trailer

These activities and services require special trailers, and Van Eck seemed to be the proper address, according to Maesawa. However, there must be a mutual understanding to work together very closely. Meanwhile, TransWeb has worked together with van Eck for the past seven years. Trailers feature a specially lowered loading floor to create more inner space, enabling TransWeb to transport more exclusive cars in a safe way. “We have proved this with our customers time and again, and we will do the same now in airfreight”, Maesawa explains.  “With trailers we use for racing teams in motorsports, as well as on many other occasions, Van Eck has proved to be a close partner ready to figure out solutions that work for us. Meanwhile, there was never at any point a concession when it comes to buildquality”, Maesawa says. TransWeb now runs a fleet of 70 trailers and 50 trucks. Also, Transweb operates a fleet of seventy rigids.

Timing

Maesawa likes to see his trailers to be delivered in time. “Van Eck trailers clearly fit our job. They are robust and reliable en delivery is at the right time. This helps tremendously in operating our business the way we prefer.”He appears also to be satisfied with the assistance of Van Eck when it comes to importing trailers into Japan and to ensure that documents are perfect. The new SPECIAL airfreight trailers will be shipped to Japan. A previous stock of two trailer was driven overland with new trucks from The Netherlands to Wladiwostok, in the east of Russia. There, they proceeded on a ferry for the final part of the journey.

Bolsius Expands with 5 Special Double Deck Trailers

Bolsius is expanding the number of double-deck trailers by 5 units. In total there are now 10 units at Bolsius. The design that Van Eck developed 6 years ago has turned out to be a great success. The vehicle has an insulated body that is split vertically into two parts. The lower part has a special tank suitable for the transport of approximately 23 tons of liquid paraffin. The top section has a height of 1,850 mm and offers a loading capacity of 33 Euro pallets. The first prototype has now driven no less than 1,500,000 km.

Temperature guaranteed during the winter period

The tank part is equipped with a special heating system so that the liquid cargo can be transported at a constant temperature of 85 ° C on the route from the Netherlands to Poland. Because the insulation value of the bodywork is at a high level, the load does not need to be heated during normal use and the paraffin remains at optimum temperature level. The heating pipes in the tank are made in case of a calamity and the tank needs to be heated. Even in the winter, when there is a temperature difference of 105 ° C, the temperature of the paraffin remains guaranteed.

100% load factor

The upper part of the body has an internal height of 1,850 m. Back to the Netherlands, 33 pallets of 23 tons of finished products are returned as return cargo. This vehicle ensures a 100% load factor. Despite the pressure on costs and care for the environment, there are still few companies that are able to achieve this. With these sustainable results, Bolsius is high on the ranking of sustainable business operations in the field of transport movements.

Lightweight construction

The weight of the vehicle and the insulation of the body played a major role in the construction. The body consists of a combination of specially developed synthetic fibers from the aerospace industry and other lightweight synthetic materials that have been manufactured into a lightweight insulated body using a wet-on-wet process. The semi-self-supporting chassis is lightweight. This low weight is achieved by using smart constructions of high-strength steel.

Patented corner joints and safety bulkheads

Various swing baffles have been installed in the tank area to absorb fluctuations during braking. The patented flexible corner connections ensure liquid-tight connections. The outlet of the tank is fitted at the rear of the body.

Suitable for other forms of liquid transport in combination with pallet loading

This transport solution is also suitable for other forms of liquid transport combined with palletised cargo. Examples are the transport of animal fats, which also have to be transported heated, and mineral oils such as olive oil and corn oil.

Van Eck delivers the 14th Chick Thermo Transporter to Fraport AG

Last month Van Eck delivered the 14th Chick Thermo Transporter to Fraport AG, Frankfurt. The Chick Thermo Transporter is intended for transporting live chicks from the aircraft to the animal facility at the airport.

Fraport AG is the biggest handler of airfreight at Frankfurt airport. In 1997 Van Eck developed the first Chick Thermo Transporter for Fraport. In recent years the vehicle has been further developed with the aim of transporting day-old chicks under perfect conditions at the airport and increasing the sustainability of the vehicle. In the development Van Eck has used its expertise in the area of airfreight and day-old chick transport.

A great deal of expertise can be seen in the transport of live chicks. It is essential that the body temperature of the chicks is kept at the right level and that the chicks get sufficient oxygen. By using advanced technologies such as extra fans, a filtration system and a specially designed blower ceiling it is possible to get an optimum oxygen level in the cargo compartment. This limits the loss of chicks during transport as far as possible.

This type of vehicle can also be used for goods such as computer chips and other temperature-sensitive products because of the readily controllable temperature and suspension.

By using the technique of independent wheel suspension (as in double-deck trailers) the life was also greatly improved and the tyres last five times longer. The cargo that can be carried with this vehicle is 5.000 kg, or in other words 1 airfreight pallet which is 3.180mm long.

Van Eck delivers the 7th Kiep Cool

Van Eck delivered two Kiep Cool semi-trailers last week. With this delivery, Van Eck launched its sixth and seventh Kiep Cool semi-trailers. The Kiep Cool semi-trailer is a vehicle specially designed for the refrigerated transport of bulk materials. This vehicle is particularly suitable for transporting wet meat, shrimp, offal, pet food, etc.

Loading is done through a roof hatch located along the entire length of the body. This pneumatic hatch closes the body watertight. To unload the goods, the body can be tilted hydraulically. The goods are then unloaded via a hatch in the rear of the body. This rear hatch is also pneumatically locked watertight.

During the development of the Kiep Cool semi-trailer, special emphasis was placed on the vehicle’s multi-purpose capability. A large door is integrated into the tailgate of the body to allow loading and unloading of other types of goods. This allows combined transport, which enables a higher degree of utilization of the semi-trailer.

The body is cooled by a Carrier Supra 550 refrigeration unit. Since the evaporator is located very compactly next to the diesel engine, this means additional loading volume. When the semitrailer is tilted, the cooling unit is automatically switched off.
